TOKYO, Japan, January 9th, 2002 --
Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE), a leader
in the test and measurement industry, has announced
today that it has begun sales of its R3860 RF (Radio
Frequency) Component Analyzers. Targeted at research
labs and production lines for wireless communication
devices and related electronic components, the R3860
possesses the world's fastest measuring speed of 10
micro-s/point. This instrument is the first offering
from Advantest's new lineup of test equipment that will
be based upon their unique Wizard of Module Test (WMT)
architecture.
As the adoption of third and
eventually fourth-generation mobile communications
continues to pick up steam, the pace of technological
innovation for wireless communication devices and RF
components is predicted to accelerate. Furthermore,
because the majority of factories have switched to
manufacturing a broad range of products in smaller
quantities, new test equipment must be flexible enough
to evaluate application specific devices, while at the
same time providing higher throughputs and lowering the
cost of test.
The R3860 has the flexibility to
measure such increasingly complex RF components as
balanced input/output devices, front-end modules, and
mixers, because its design allows functions to be easily
changed and expanded as needed. This instrument also
offers improved testing throughput and cost performance
thanks to its accelerated measuring
speed. | |

 WMT
Architecture
 |
|
Previously, whenever a company needed to perform a
new type of testing, switch to the manufacturing of a new
device, or adapt to improvements in a device's functions or
performance, they needed to invest in new test equipment.
Thanks to the R3860's unique WMT architecture, however, once
they purchase their initial system, users will be able to
simply add on the functions needed for new types of testing.
The foundation of the WMT architecture is a common platform
that serves as the instrument's external frame. This platform
contains a maximum of twenty slots into which various
combinations of panel-shaped modules--containing functions
such as signal generators and circuitry for voltage source
current measurement--can be inserted. Advantest is confident
that this new architecture will provide the flexibility to
respond to the rising demand for enhanced measuring instrument
functions and performance resulting from the rapid evolution
in RF components. By simply switching or expanding these
modules, engineers and operators will now be able to get the
testing functions and performance they need, when they need
it, and with a minimum amount of investment

Increased Throughput Via the World's Fastest
Measuring Speed
 |
|
Leveraging their expertise in high-speed signal
processing and high-speed settling times, Advantest engineers
have succeeded in giving the R3860 the world's fastest sweep
time of 10 micro-s/point (a ten-fold improvement over the
company's previous offering).
Along with a measurable
frequency range of 300kHz to 8GHz, the R3860 also has a wide
array of analysis capabilities such as impedance conversion,
deletion of the circuitry that connects to the DUT, matching
circuitry, analysis of balanced devices, and time domain
analysis. The R3860 also enables easy characterization of
increasingly complex RF components such as differential
input/output circuitry and front-end modules. This instrument
is particularly well-suited for the measurement of balanced
multi-port devices because it can come with up to four
built-in test ports and can further be expanded to offer a
maximum of twelve ports when using an external test adapter.
When interfaced with a GP-IB (General Purpose
Interface Bus) or LAN, the R3860 also has the data management
and remote control capabilities that were available in
Advantest's previous product offering.

 Detachable Touch Screen
 |
|
 In
addition to its many testing features, the R3860 was also
designed to increase the operator's productivity. The R3860
uses a 12.1-inch LCD color display that comes with a
detachable touch screen and allows easy operation without
having to connect it to a separate computer. This display can
be split into a maximum of sixteen separate windows, which
enables users to simultaneously observe up to thirty-two
different measurement results. The advantage of the detachable
touch screen is that it can be placed in the spot that makes
operating the instrument the easiest--a feature that can be
extremely useful when the R3860 is used within an automated
component handler.
Furthermore, to ensure that test
programs can be developed quickly and easily, the R3860 comes
with easy-to-use Visual Basic software.
