New Portable Spectrum Analyzer Is Smallest, Lightest In Class Measures Wireless Signals in Microwave, Milliwave Bands

TOKYO, Japan -July 6, 2005- Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE),
the global leader in semiconductor test systems, today announced availability of its new
portable spectrum analyzer, the U3771 (supporting frequencies up to 31.8 GHz) / U3772
(supporting frequencies up to 43 GHz). Smaller and lighter than any other model in this
category, the U3771 / U3772 can be operated on battery power, making it an ideal tool for
monitoring the microwave and milliwave bands that are used in satellite transmissions and
between cellular telephone base stations.
As third-generation cellular telephone services spread worldwide, their supporting
networks of base stations are also expanding rapidly. The antennas of these base stations
must be installed at precise angles in order to exchange signals accurately. Further, since
transmissions on the microwave bandwidth from 20 GHz – 30 GHz can be blocked by physical
obstacles, the stations are largely built on the roofs of tall buildings or in the mountains.
These considerations fuel the industry’s need for a small, light, highly portable spectrum
analyzer for construction, inspection, and maintenance work.
At 308 cm (W) x 175 (H) x 209 (D) and less than 6 kg, Advantest’s new U3771 / U3772
portable spectrum analyzer is the smallest in the world to support measurements from
9 KHz – 31.8 / 43 GHz. Its newly developed input circuitry system fits into a compact
casing less than half the size of the company’s previous model, the R3182. Designed for
convenient field use, the U3771 / U3772 can operate either on an AC/DC power source or
on a battery with a life of approximately two hours. Furthermore, its warmup time has been
cut to less than five minutes - approximately 1/6th that of previous models - allowing
technicians to complete their work rapidly and efficiently.
While the U3771 / U3772 is lighter and more compact than previous models, its design
cuts no corners in terms of functionality. It boasts a full suite of measurement functions
including channel-power, frequency, adjacent-channel power, and occupied-bandwidth. A high
sampling rate provides improved measurement repeatability of 0.01 dB, permitting the U3771 / U3772
to make power measurements that previously required a power meter as well as a signal analyzer.
It features, moreover, a highly sensitive input (<117 dBm @ 34 GHz: Typ) that enables it to detect
even very weak signals and take measurements under a wide range of indoor and outdoor conditions.
The U3771 / U3772 features a LAN port as well as a GB-IB interface. Measurement data can easily be
transferred to the customer’s computer environment for ease of management.
