Advantest Introduces the R4870 Bluetooth Tester
March 27, 2002
Dedicated Bluetooth Tester Combines Radio Frequency and Interoperability Testing Capabilities within a Single Unit
R4870
TOKYO, Japan, March 27th, 2002 -- Advantest Corporation (TSE: 6857, NYSE: ATE) has announced today that it has begun sales of its R4870 Bluetooth Tester, which will help manufacturers ensure that their Bluetooth-enabled products and devices conform with the wireless technology's global specifications. Targeted for use both within R&D laboratories (pre-qualification testing) and manufacturing lines, the R4870 is the first Bluetooth conformance test system to combine in a single unit the ability to test both a product's radio frequency characteristics and its interoperability with other Bluetooth-enabled products.

Advantest will display the R4870 at Bluetooth Expo 2002, Asia's largest Bluetooth exhibition to be held from April 17th to the 19th at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba prefecture, Japan.

Test Equipment Crucial Driver for Bluetooth Development

In recent years, the Bluetooth specification has enjoyed enthusiastic support from companies around the world thanks to its potential to provide a low-cost solution for establishing ad hoc, short-range wireless networks between a vast range of consumer electronics such as mobile phones, PCs, and PDAs. In order for Bluetooth to live up to its potential, however, manufacturers must first ensure that their Bluetooth-enabled products can actually provide the high level of interoperability that lies at the heart of the Bluetooth concept. Access to high-performance radio frequency and interoperability test equipment that can both increase manufacturing productivity while lowering test costs has thus become a key driver behind quickly bringing new Bluetooth products to market.

R4870's Wealth of Testing Functions Ensures High Cost-Effectiveness

To help manufacturers meet the challenges of Bluetooth conformance testing, Advantest has released the R4870-a dedicated Bluetooth tester based on the company's proprietary Wizard of Module Test (WMT) architecture. The R4870 is the first Bluetooth conformance tester to offer the ability to perform both radio frequency and interoperability testing (communication test) in accordance with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group's (SIG) specifications. Designed to serve as a stand-alone solution to manufacturing line and pre-shipment testing, the R4870 can also be combined with other testing equipment to provide pre-qualification testing of product prototypes.

For testing of the Bluetooth radio layer, the R4870 is capable of performing tests on output power, modulation characteristics, initial carrier frequency tolerance, and sensitivity as defined by the SIG. The R4870 also comes with a number of additional functions such as the ability to automatically startup testing of Bluetooth modules via its embedded Host Control Interface (HCI) and the ability to perform testing using a "dirty" transmitter signal (an irregularly modulated signal used to test a product's modulation characteristics).

Also, because the R4870 has built-in protocols for the execution of Blue Unit test cases (test programs used to ensure a minimum level of interoperability), manufacturers will be able to perform the SIG's communication tests without having to procure separate interoperability test equipment. To help shorten test times-and thus reduce manufacturing costs-the R4870 comes with a unique high-speed testing mode function for manufacturing line and pre-shipment testing. And, to ensure high usability, the R4870 incorporates a 12-inch color touch-panel display that will enable test engineers to quickly alter their testing setup.

Furthermore, when used in conjunction with other test equipment such as spectrum analyzers and pattern generators*, the R4870 is also capable of testing all the radio frequency requirements specified by the SIG. Manufacturers will thus have the power to perform pre-qualification testing and accelerate their certification process by a Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF).

Applicable testing equipment are limited to models designated by Advantest.
